Excellent communication is an important skill every employer looks for in an employee. Effective communication can make you a more productive person by removing time used to solve miscommunications. You can use your effective communication skills outside of the workplace as well. It may help you make and keep long lasting relationships. Here are 5 ways you can improve your communication. <\/p>\r\n \r\n

1.\tDo not multitask.<\/h6>\r\n\r\n

When conversing with someone do not multitask. You should not be on your phone or typing an email. Be Present. This includes daydreaming. If you are lost in thought of yesterday\u2019s date, you are not hearing what is being said. <\/p>\r\n\r\n

2. Enter every conversation assuming you have something to learn. <\/h6>\r\n\r\n

This means to set aside opinion and just listen. Pretend that you have no judgements or knowledge of the subject. If you try this, I can guarantee that you learn something new every day. It can also help you grow more empathy towards others by learning their opinions and values. <\/p>\r\n\r\n

3. Body Language. <\/h6>\r\n\r\n

Pay attention to body language, yours, and others. Body language speaks just as you do! Yawning or sighing can give off the impression that you are bored. Slouching can make you seem unmotivated. Leaning forward can show a person that you are open and giving attention. Smiling can make you seem confident and easy. Eye contact is best and cannot be forgotten. <\/p>\r\n\r\n

4. Sit in the silence. <\/h6>\r\n\r\n

Try just being okay with the pauses in conversation. Try not fill them with um, uh, and hmm. If you do not know what to say, then do not say anything. Think about it first. Doing this will also give them time to think as well, achieving a much more meaningful conversation. <\/p>\r\n\r\n

5. Feedback. <\/h6>\r\n\r\n

Let who you are conversing with know you understand by summarizing what they told you back. This confirms everything was understood with both you and the person you are speaking with. Do not be afraid to ask for feedback as well! Asking someone for feedback can also help the person you are asking to feel valued and appreciated. <\/p>\r\n\r\n
