Education Assistant Diploma Program in Winnipeg

Educational assistants assist with classroom management, instruction and provide one-on-one support for students. Educational Assistants play a key role in the implementation of Individualized Education Plans as well as Behaviour Support Plans for identified students.

The Educational Assistant Diploma Program at Commonwealth College prepares you with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to thrive as an Educational Assistant by providing all students background on the theoretical and practical components of the job. All students will participate in over 400 hours of instruction, accompanied by 120 hours of hands-on learning through an on-site placement.

Education Assistant (EA) diploma program at Commonwealth College prepares students for work in the classroom, as well as for getting a job in the field.

We provide a flexible program delivery that allows you to study at your own pace while also offering the opportunity to participate in live lectures during the week to connect with your instructor.

We understand that remote learning can sometimes feel isolating, which is why we ensure that you are never alone in your educational journey. Our dedicated instructors and education team are always available to support you through various communication channels, including video calls, discussion boards, and more.

Practicum/CO-OP Details

Overview

Upon completion of all theory courses, students are required to engage in a real-life school environment to apply and reinforce their classroom learning. Each student has to fulfill 120 practicum hoursover a four-week period . This process should be initiated at least one month prior to the start of the practicum. Students should contact our Career Services Coordinator and submit a list of four preferred schools, all of which must be selected from the same school division. Following this, students will begin gathering the necessary documents. While we try to accommodate student preferences, placement at one of their chosen schools is not guaranteed.

ELIGIBILITY

To be admitted into the Educational Assistant Diploma Program, you must have your Manitoba Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent or have Mature Student Status.

For Mature Student Status you must be 18 years of age or older and must provide all official transcripts or recognized equivalent GED, a current resume, and a written statement explaining why you are interested in the program. In addition, you must successfully undergo an admission interview administered by the College.

All students must submit Adult Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector (ACRVS) and Provincial Child Abuse Registry (PCAR) check documents prior to attending the practicum. These must be less than six months old at the start of practicum.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

As English is the language of instruction at Commonwealth College, it is critical that all applicants demonstrate sufficient English Language Proficiency before they can be admitted into the program. Therefore, if your previous education was completed outside Canada and English may or may not have been the medium of instruction, you must submit proof of English language proficiency.
